Hey Guys , while fiddling around with other builds this came up, the club is having a little comp and the topic will be Rhodesian Army. I have decided to do a Landrover like the one below.

This depiction of an armoured Landrover as uses by the Common Wealth forces during the elections and subsequent transition of Rhodesia to Zimbabwe, there is no kit available for this vehicle.

aim.jpg

I don't think that the colour on the one in the pic is right, seems way to light should be a very dark green. I will be converting a SAS Pink Panther Landie to meet this requirement, the problem is that the one in the picture is a Series III land rover and the Pink Panther a Series II, I will be able to change everything as it should be except for the DashBoard, this is doable but way to complicated for the time that I have,So this will basically be a Late Series 2B, Pre Series 3. Luckily I have rebuild a few 1 scale Land Rovers in the past and have one in the Drive Way, what better reference hey.

There will be extensive modifications that I will need to do and I will indicate these in the following Pics.

landie_1.jpg

Above is the Pink Panther stripped and ready for Modification

landie_2.jpg

Above. The grill hanger, the light will need to be moved from between the wings onto the wings, the grill is also wrong, but don't know how to address this yet, but have a plan. Every thing in red is incorrect

landie_3.jpg

Above the Bonnet, the square cover plate will be remove and replaced with a scratch part so as to attache a spare wheel.

landie_4.jpg

Above, The skirts need to be removed as these were not present.

landie_5.jpg

Above is a Pic of the load bay, once again the skirts need to be removed as well as the rectangular piece on the side of the bay that Tamiya moulded in for the sand tracks on the pink Panther.

landie_6.jpg

No fuel tanks were provided for by Tamiya so these will be scratch and will need to be fitted to both sides as this can be accommodated as such. You will also notice the lack of a fuel filler, but in some instances these were located behind the seats.

Well I hape you all enjoy

As i progress I will indicate the other modifications.

Here a quick update on progress thus far ( I have added this as I started this a while ago )

Work done according to the previous post, I still have to cut the holes in the front grill hanger and add some more detail to the inside as if a radiator is shown.

Cheers and thanks.

Hello Graeme, what an interesting subject and alterations.
Builds like your’s are fascinating because sometimes solutions pop up that I can learn from.
I’m looking forward to your next posting.

nice start, i presume the round tubular structure is some kind of rollcage?

glad to see your work again. how did the Tatra 805 come together?

Thanks Guys, the Tatra is still a work in progress, will post an update there shortly.

Yes that is a roll cage, this is a anti land-mine LandRover, you will see further in the project how the armour and roll cage comes together.

Hey G, wellcome back to this site.
amazing conversion you are making and a very special Landie it is.
Hope to see more soon!

Well decided to mould some parts for the Landie

what led to this , while going through my stash of landies looking for an example of a front end for the series 3 landie I found a Italleri Series 3 Land Rover with all the parts i needed to build this conversion.

The only issue is that it has a dash for a left hand drive, this meant that I had to mould the kit part, and cast a few copies, now I will modify the castings and convert it to a right hand drive, then recast it and see how it all looks.

I also copied the nose and a spare wheel, don't know how these look yet waiting for the mould to set completely.

In the meantime I made the 2 fuel tanks and refitted the rear axles.

Here are some pix of the Parts all mounted and ready for making the moulds.

Above the dash, nose section and wheel.

moulds_2.jpg

Above some very fine detail, hope to keep it.

Here is a quick rundown of what was done

fuel_tank_1.jpg

fuel_tank_2.jpg

Above 2 pix of the fuel tanks that I built, that are technically 100% correct as I referenced the real thing.

result_2.jpg

Above is the mould for the Left Hand drive dash and a casting made from it, I made a few castings so as to make the modifications for the RH Drive Dash

grill_mould_1.jpg

grill_mould_2.jpg

Above is the box that I built around the initial mould so as to cast the second half of what I call a squish mould and the second pic is one of the 2 mould halves, the mould for the spare wheel is included in the same mould block.

result_1.jpg

result_3.jpg

result_4.jpg

Above are the casts that I made from the mould, the grill came out amazingly and all the fine detail is is there.
The first attempt at the spare wheel failed badly, however as can be seen the second is just fine.

master_1.jpg

above is the modified dash, the one on the right is for a Right Hand Drive vehicle and will serve as the master to create a mould with.

rh_dash.jpg

As you can see above the casting of the RH dash came out perfectly and will be fitted shortly.

base_1.jpg

base_2.jpg

Above is the landie as it stands now about 10 years after the parrot got hold of it, you can see the armour has been fitted on the underside and the new Nose end. I will try my luck at making a base for this little one, will be a first so mmmm

A close up of the nose afar the required modifications.

Hope you enjoy and comments most welcome.

Hey,

Nice to see you here G :) ;)
And, what a work m8, several hours of sanding await you :)
Nice work so far. ;)

WOW Graeme, that's a giant task you took upon yourself.
I like what I'm seeing so far. Clean and crisp moulds and castings you've made.
Looking forward to more of this beauty.

Mark

A quick little update here, I fitted the dash and it is looking damn fine. I also made a steering column that will be fitted shortly.

dash_1.jpg

dash_2.jpg

Added the under fender armour this evening, none of it will be seen but if anyone becomes super critical it is there ,

noseon_1.jpg

Also fitted the nose to the chassis, and started with the other armour as well, its a bit tricky but i should make good progress tomorrow.

noseon_2.jpg

You can also see the under chassis armour and the fuel tanks.

Enjoy

Guys , thanks for all the comments.

@ Steban
Thanks for the info on the colour ,very interesting, but the look I am going for is the one in the image below, most of the ref pictures that I have sourced have the Rhodesia Landies as dark green. I am assuming Dark Bronze Green which is also a standard Landie colour

Thanks all

Some more progress, added the internal armour to the cab,
Some quick advise for those that want to do this conversion, cut the pieces of armour out before assembling the landie.

Enjoy

Its been a quiet weekend so far, however I have reached the stage now where i need to make the seats, both front and rear, the front are easy to do from the reference material I have, the rear seats will also be scratch built, for this one I have the real thing as a sample.

real_4.jpg

Above are pix of the real rear seat that I will use as reference.

seat_1.jpg

Above is the first of the front seats that have been built, 1 to go.

Enjoy

Looking great Graeme. Of course it's an advantage to have the real thing so close to home...
What material did you use to fabricate the cushions ?

Mark

Hey Mark , thanks for the comments, the seats have been cast out of resin, same as for the dash nose and spare wheel.
